Opportunity Summary 

We need a team of motivated volunteers to help us increase Carlsbad's Summer Concerts (TGIF) diversion. TGIF's audiences includes over 30,000 friends and- neighbors gathered together to enjoy diverse musical experiences presented in the four largest parks in Carlsbad. Republic Services role in TGIF is to monitor the waste sorting stations, encourage and educate residents to use the correct 3 bin sorting system, and weight the bins at the end of each event to obtain diversion data. Our goal is to have each concert increase in diversion.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Participants will learn: Waste Diversion Proper 3-bin System Sorting Importance of Collaboration with Community Partners Human Behaviors regarding Waste Ability to Educate Others Customer Service Skills Data Collection Environmental Initiatives and Laws Event Sustainability Business Side of the Waste Industry and more!

Opportunity Training 

Students will be required to attend a training prior to the start of their service learning opportunity. They will be trained on what goes into the recycle, organics, and trash, how to spot contamination, how to capture and track data, event safety, and provided handouts/educational materials to further help in educating the students.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Those who apply should be able to pull up to 50lbs, able to stand for periods of time, and the ability to bend.
