Opportunity Summary 

Picture a school that fits the needs of every student—a community school. The school cares for the whole child, expands learning horizons, builds family relationships, and works together to realize a shared vision—our elementary school partners with stakeholders to create the conditions students need to thrive. Whether you are interested in coaching and mentoring, tutoring, or helping with community and administrative tasks, you have a role. You’ll have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of young students and their families while gaining valuable experience and developing important skills. All service learning backgrounds are welcome. Join us for ten weeks and be part of a community of learners dedicated to making a difference!

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Four Pillars of Community Schools

1. Integrated Student Supports:

-Collaborating with educators to provide classroom assistance through aligned curriculum, organization, and additional support.

-To help children develop the cognitive, language, and social-emotional skills needed to be capable readers through literacy mentorship.

2. Active Family and Community Engagement

-To participate in planning and executing events that bring together students, families, and community partners.

-To establish positive relationships with students and families of diverse backgrounds.

3. Expanded and Enriched Learning Opportunities

-To plan, facilitate, and evaluate clubs during and/or after school programs for Kindergarten

- 5th grade (i.e., art, drama, science, chess, board games, sports, literacy, homework, etc.)

4. Collaborate Leadership

-To assist with school and community administrative tasks that support the betterment of students

Opportunity Training 

-Orientation 

-Volunteers get two hours of training on strategies to support students' text comprehension through the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE).

-On-going training support as needed

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Service Learning Students will learn proper school safety and ethics procedures during orientation This can include:

-Community School Model

-Social media policy

-Checking in/ out at the office

-Lockdown/ emergency procedures

-Child development and appropriate interactions

-And more
