The Innovation Hub at CSUSM presents a groundbreaking opportunity: a faculty-guided, student-operated marketing agency offering complimentary marketing services to regional nonprofits and budding entrepreneurs. This venture – Cougar Catalyst - not only equips students with invaluable real-world experience but also extends a helping hand to organizations striving to make a difference. By bridging academic learning with practical application, CSUSM is pioneering an experiential learning program that promises future scalability and self-sustainability.   

The selected students will be integral to an interdisciplinary team of 8-10 peers, each bringing unique skills from marketing, communications, and design. Together, they will manage a dynamic client portfolio, ensuring that each organization's message is effectively and innovatively communicated to its target audience. This opportunity is more than just an internship; it's a chance to shape the future of marketing while making a tangible impact in the community. 

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Embrace the role of a Web Developer/Designer in our student-run marketing agency and become a key player in crafting the online presence of non-profits. This internship offers a unique combination of creativity and technical skill, as you will design and develop websites that are not only visually appealing but also functional and user-friendly. You will work on diverse projects, gaining experience in web design, coding, and SEO optimization. This role provides the opportunity to understand how website design impacts a brand's online identity and user engagement. Collaborating with SEO specialists and content creators, you'll learn how to create holistic, effective online experiences for our clients. This position is perfect for students passionate about web technology and design, seeking to build a portfolio that demonstrates a wide range of skills. 

Knowledge or Skills to Acquire 

  • Skills in web design and development technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WordPress). 

  • Understanding of responsive and accessible design principles. 

  • Knowledge of SEO principles and how they integrate with web design. 

  • Experience in user interface and user experience design. 

  • Collaboration with SEO and content teams for cohesive web experiences. 

Tasks/Activities 

  • Designing and developing client websites. 

  • Ensuring websites are responsive and accessible across devices. 

  • Collaborating with the SEO team for search engine-friendly designs. 

  • Regularly updating and maintaining websites. 

  • Participating in design and development brainstorming sessions. 

Desired Qualifications for All Roles: 

  • Enrollment Status: Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at CSUSM, having completed a minimum of 60 units. 

  • Academic Achievement: Should possess a minimum GPA of 3.0. 

  • Personal Attributes: 

    • Conscientious: Demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail in all aspects of work. 

    • Team Player: Shows a collaborative spirit and the ability to work well in a team environment. 

    • Self-Motivated: Exhibits initiative and the ability to drive projects forward independently. 

    • Adaptable: Capable of adjusting to various tasks and responsibilities as needed. 

    • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills. 

    • Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively, balancing internship responsibilities with academic commitments. 

    • Technical Requirements: Must have personal equipment (like a computer and relevant software) necessary to complete work assignments or must be able to regularly access campus resources for the same. 

Schedule: 

  • Regular Meetings: The team will convene 2-3 times each week, totaling a minimum of 4 hours, to discuss weekly tasks and meet with clients. The specific meeting times will be determined based on the availability provided by team members during their application process. 

  • Meeting Locations: Most meetings will take place at the Innovation Hub, but occasionally, some meetings may be held remotely. 

  • Flexibility for Other Work: Tasks outside of these meetings can be completed remotely and are flexible in terms of scheduling. 

Hours and Compensation: 

This is an unpaid internship completed for academic credit through enrollment in various internship courses (MKTG 484/482, UNIV 495, or other).

  • Creative Problem Solving: Cultivate the ability to creatively solve unique challenges encountered in digital projects. 

  • Proficiency in Relevant Tools and Technologies: Learn and apply industry-standard tools and technologies relevant to digital marketing. 

  • Adaptability in a Fast-Paced Industry: Learn to quickly adapt in the dynamic and evolving digital marketing industry. 

Opportunity Training 

Students will have the option to access certification courses through online platforms such as Coursera and HubSpot, as needed. Additionally, we offer mentorship from a network of local professionals and alumni, ensuring theoretical and practical support is readily available to align with their internship responsibilities.
