Resource Center AssistantAt — Solana Center for Environmental Innovation

Opportunity Summary

This opportunity involves assisting at our Encinitas location where we sell supplies for composting, vermicomposting and rain water harvesting, collect electronic waste for recycling, and operate our Tool Lending Library and Green Convene dishware loan program. You may also join in our regular on-site events in which small groups of volunteers help to maintain our garden and our worm farm. And you'll have the option of helping out at workshops and school presentations throughout the county as your schedule permits, where we teach composting, vermicomposting, water conservation and runoff prevention, and waste reduction (with an emphasis on food waste reduction).

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned about the implementation of a variety of sustainable practices, and how they can be taught to others. Helping to staff our front desk allows you to engage directly with community members, hear the myriad of questions they bring to us on a wide range of sustainability topics, and see how our staff addresses them. Assisting with site maintenance provides hands on experience in gardening and operating a worm farm. And supporting our educational presentations and workshops allows you to observe how we teach about soil regeneration, water conservation and waste reduction at the introductory level.

Opportunity Training

Students will be given a general orientation as part of their first shift at our Encinitas Climate Solutions Resources Center, provided by our Site Supervisor. All other specific instructions will be provided as needed by the staff member(s) the student will be assisting. Students will be able to learn as they go, with staff will always present to supervise and answer questions.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Some activities occasionally require lifting 20 - 30 pounds. Students will always be able to opt out of any task that is too strenuous or uncomfortable. Gloves and masks are always available for things such as organizing electronic waste in our storage shed, or for gardening tasks.
