Investigative InternshipAt — Department of the Public Defender, County of San Diego
Undergraduate and graduate students may participate in our Investigations Internship Program. Our teams of professional defense investigators are critical to the protection of civil liberties for those accused of crimes. Interns may assist defense investigators in visiting crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, observing court hearings, taking crime scene photographs, and serving subpoenas. All Investigative Interns are volunteers who receive invaluable on-the-job training and experience. Some students may receive academic credit for the internship program from their school.
Interns learn various skills including investigative skills, how to conduct background checks, proper service of legal paperwork, and professional communication skills. They involved in workings of the Criminal Justice system, learn about the law and court system, as well as how other agencies interact within the system. Our volunteers are exposed to various career tracks in the Criminal Justice system and legal field, including Investigators, attorneys, paralegals, etc, as well as other paths with other agencies.
Interns in our office receive an orientation as well as hands on training and support throughout the internship experience.
Interns will have opportunities to visit incarcerated individuals and go with investigators into high-risk neighborhoods and areas. Safety is of utmost importance to our staff, and we train staff and interns to avoid risky situations.
Students should submit resume, transcripts, and a letter of interest to PDI@sdcounty.ca.gov. Visit the website for additional details (https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/public_defender/InvestigatorI... )
