Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the semester, college students volunteering as Teaching Assistants at Heritage Homestead Club will have gained valuable experience and skills in several key areas: Learning Outcomes and Skills: Child Development and Education: Hands-on experience in guiding and teaching children, enhancing understanding of child behavior, learning styles, and classroom management techniques. Practical Life Skills: Proficiency in various homesteading activities, including cooking, crafting, gardening, and basic animal care, such as raising chickens. Agricultural and Sustainability Practices: Knowledge of sustainable living practices, including organic gardening and the restoration of farm equipment, like an antique tractor. Teamwork and Collaboration: Improved teamwork skills through collaboration with staff, fellow volunteers, and students, contributing to a cohesive learning environment. Leadership and Communication: Strengthened leadership abilities by mentoring and guiding students, along with refined communication skills, essential for interacting with children, parents, and colleagues. Problem-Solving and Creativity: Enhanced problem-solving abilities and creative thinking through involvement in project-based learning and hands-on activities. Opportunity Training 

The training for Volunteer Teaching Assistants at Heritage Homestead Club will focus on providing a solid foundation in the program's structure, philosophy, and expectations, with an emphasis on learning by doing. Here’s how the training will be structured: Pre-Volunteering Briefing: Program Overview: Students will receive an introduction to the Farm and Homesteading Program, including the goals, activities, and the importance of hands-on learning. Policies and Procedures: A brief review of essential policies, including safety protocols, child interaction guidelines, and the roles and responsibilities of volunteers. Philosophy and Expectations: Discussion on the program’s philosophy of fostering self-reliance, creativity, and teamwork, along with expectations for volunteer conduct and communication. On-the-Job Training: Observation: Initial shifts will involve observing experienced staff or volunteers in action to understand effective teaching techniques and classroom management. Guided Participation: Volunteers will gradually take on responsibilities under the guidance of the program director, with opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback in real-time. Active Engagement: As volunteers gain confidence, they will be encouraged to take a more active role in assisting with activities, directly interacting with the children while continuing to learn through experience.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Program takes place outdoors about half of the time. Teaching Assistants should bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, wear closed toed shoes and sun protection clothing.
