Educational Intern - Citizenship Preparation ProgramAt — Pathways to Citizenship
The Educational Intern will play a vital role in assisting with the coordination and delivery of the Citizenship Preparation Program at Pathways to Citizenship. This position offers a hands-on learning experience in adult education, civic engagement, and immigrant support. The intern will work directly with program participants, helping to facilitate sessions, develop instructional materials, and support volunteer tutors. Additionally, the intern will help manage program logistics, such as maintaining attendance records and providing administrative support for citizenship exam preparation. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in education, social work public service, or immigration law.
By the end of the internship, students may acquire the following knowledge and skills: 1) Curriculum Development & Instruction: Hands-on experience in creating and adapting instructional materials, facilitating group study sessions, and supporting adult learners in preparing for the U.S. Citizenship exam. 2) Cross-Cultural Communication: Improved ability to engage with individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, enhancing communication and empathy skills in an educational setting. 3) Program Coordination & Administration: Experience in managing program logistics, including scheduling, maintaining records, tracking participant progress, and supporting the program's administrative needs. 4. Understanding of U.S. Immigration & Naturalization: In-depth knowledge of the U.S. naturalization process, including legal requirements and exam content, which will provide valuable insight into immigration law and policy. 5. Volunteer & Classroom Management: Skills in working with volunteers, supporting their efforts in class facilitation, and developing leadership abilities through coordination efforts. 6. Public Speaking & Teaching: Strengthened confidence in public speaking, presentation, and teaching, particularly in explaining complex information in accessible ways. 7. Problem-Solving & Adaptability: Enhanced problem-solving skills by addressing individual learner needs and adapting to different teaching environments and learning styles.
Students will receive comprehensive training to prepare them for their responsibilities in the Citizenship Preparation Program. Students will participate in an Orientation and 2-week training period where the following information is covered: 1. U.S. Naturalization Process: Training on the U.S. citizenship process, including an overview of eligibility requirements, the naturalization exam, and the USCIS interview process. 2. Civic Knowledge & Content Training: In-depth training on U.S. history, government, and civics content covered in the citizenship exam, ensuring interns are well-prepared to teach and answer participant questions. 3. Teaching & Tutoring Techniques: Guidance on effective adult education methods, including lesson planning, facilitating group discussions, and adapting teaching strategies to diverse learning styles. 4. Cross-Cultural Communication: Student will be given resources on cultural competency and effective communication with English language learners and individuals from various cultural backgrounds. 5. Program Logistics & Administration: Training on how to manage participant records, track attendance, and maintain other administrative tasks essential for program operation. 6. Volunteer Support: Training on working with and supporting volunteer instructors, including how to assist with class facilitation and offer classroom management support. 7. Technology & Resource Management: Training on how to use relevant software and tools for organizing educational materials, tracking participant progress, and communicating with program staff. This training will provide the intern with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently take on their role in the program.
