VITA Intern At — Interfaith Community Services

Opportunity Summary

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is an IRS-funded program that offers free basic Tax preparation to qualified individuals making under $67,000 a year. We offer tax assistance in North County all year round and help over 2,000 taxpayers each year. The program is operated mainly by Volunteers who become certified through the IRS each year in Basic and Advanced tax laws.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, students will have the opportunity to develop a strong foundation in tax preparation and financial literacy while gaining hands-on experience serving the community. Students will strengthen their communication and interpersonal skills by working directly with diverse populations, including low-income individuals and families, to provide clear explanations and guidance throughout the tax preparation process. The experience also fosters teamwork and collaboration, as students work alongside trained volunteers and staff to efficiently serve over 2,000 taxpayers each year. Beyond technical expertise, students will develop a deep understanding of community needs and the impact of financial assistance programs, preparing them for future roles in financial services, nonprofit work, or public service.

Opportunity Training

On the student's first day, they will receive comprehensive training from program staff to ensure they feel confident and prepared in their role. This training will cover an overview of the program, expectations, and best practices for engaging with clients professionally and compassionately. Students will learn how to complete their assigned tasks effectively, navigate any challenges that may arise, and utilize trauma-informed care techniques to support individuals in need. Additionally, staff will be available to provide hands-on guidance and answer any questions, ensuring a smooth transition into the experience.

Opportunity Application Instructions
