Opportunity Summary 

The San Diego County Democratic Party’s Political Organizing Academy offers year-round opportunities for currently enrolled or recently graduated students to gain hands-on political experience. Participants engage directly with Democratic leaders, activists, and campaigns while supporting key areas of Party operations such as field organizing, communications, research, finance, and administration. This volunteer-based program provides valuable training and networking that has helped many former organizers transition into paid roles in campaigns, government, and advocacy work. Ideal applicants will have strong communication skills, attention to detail, and basic proficiency with office technology. A commitment of 5–10 hours per week is expected, including occasional weekend availability. Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in politics and a commitment to Democratic values and candidates. The program is an excellent opportunity to build skills, expand political knowledge, and contribute meaningfully to the Democratic movement in San Diego County.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the Political Organizing Academy, students will have gained valuable experience in political organizing and professional development that prepares them for future roles in campaigns, government, or advocacy work. Participants will develop: Organizing Skills – including voter engagement, volunteer recruitment, and event coordination Communication Skills – such as public speaking, political writing, and social media strategy Technical Proficiency – in tools like Google Workspace, Zoom, and voter contact databases (e.g., VAN) Political Knowledge – including understanding Democratic Party structure, campaign strategy, and key local issues Professional Skills – such as time management, teamwork, adaptability, and attention to detail Students will leave the program with a clearer understanding of how politics works at the local level, stronger connections in the political community, and the confidence to take the next step in their career or civic engagement journey.

Opportunity Training 

Students receive ongoing support and training throughout their internship to ensure successful completion of their assigned responsibilities. Training is provided at the outset and continues as needed, tailored to the specific tasks and development areas of each student.
