Opportunity Summary 

In this variable unit internship, the student intern will serve as a “Civic Engagement Ambassador” (CEA) and work with the Associate Director of Experiential Learning to develop and implement their own Civic Engagement in Action Project. Through this project, the intern will support and increase civic learning and democratic engagement on campus. The purpose of the internship is to provide students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a professional environment and contribute to campus-wide campaigns for active citizenship, using a peer-to-peer model.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

• Through their Civic Engagement in Action Project, interns will see themselves as agents of change, feeling a sense of empowerment gained through making goal(s), attending to them personally, and assessing their successes and/or failures through a lens of self-reflection and personal accountability. • Interns will gain a general understanding of the broad scope of Civic Engagement activities (volunteering, voting, protesting, supporting grass roots organizations, raising awareness for self or others, engaging with local, state and federal government, etc.) and how each of these activities have the potential to create change in their communities. • Interns will gain a general understanding of a variety of change making strategies, reflect on which one(s) align most closely with their Civic Engagement in Action Project goal(s), and apply them through their Civic Engagement in Action Project to test their efficacy. o Change-making strategies include:  Awareness raising  Coalition building/grassroots organizing  Direct action (protest)  Direct advocacy (speaking during government meetings, letters to local government, submitting public comments to proposed rules, etc.)  Working and advocating within (gaining a position of power or influence within an organization, government agency, etc.) • Interns will be able to articulate Civic Engagement Basics to their Peers, using their own language, and examples from issues prevalent in their own communities/communities they are passionate about supporting through their Civic Engagement in Action Project. • Through their work in their Civic Engagement in Action Projects, interns will see the importance of and necessity of having connections throughout a diverse array of communities to achieve social change goals. Students will have de-bunked the myth of individualism and see community change as collective work.

Opportunity Training 

Interns will be required to participate in an onboarding and training session (approximately 6 hours) facilitated by the supervisor, Associate Director of Experiential Learning. During this training, they will learn the basics of their role and civic engagement basics.
