FYUP First-Year Peer Mentor InternshipAt — CSUSM - Office of Undergraduate Studies, First-Year & University Programs
This internship offers new learning experiences for students interested in education, human development, leadership, and advocacy. Students will work closely with an assigned First-Year Seminar instructor to prepare for, attend, and/or lead select UNIV 101 class sessions, to support first-year students in their academic success, and to support students in engaging with the CSUSM campus community and accessing our CSUSM campus resources. Hours can be increased up to 6 hours per week as this is a 2-unit internship.
Internee(s) will gain experience in (1) record-keeping, (2) direct student communication, (3) offering 1:1 meetings with students to support academic continuity, and (4) debriefing with faculty regarding trends and special student needs as they emerge. Additionally, Internee(s) will gain experience (1) teaching preparation/planning, (2) assignment creation/scaffolding, (3) engaging students in active learning, and (4) assessing student growth and/or need for intervention. Finally, Internee(s) will gain experience (1) resource collection, (2) “database” maintenance, (3) communication to/with students, and (4) coordinating student engagement.
Preparation/professional development and support for FY Peer Mentors will be ongoing as FY Peer Mentors connect with their assigned instructors and begin to plan for the semester.
