District InternAt — 76th Assembly District - Office of Assembly Member Dr. Darshana Patel

Opportunity Summary 

Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel is seeking a Student Intern to work in the 76th Assembly District Office for the fall quarter/semester beginning in September/October 2025. Under the direction of the District Director and staff, the intern will have an opportunity to learn about the operations of an Assembly district office: assisting with general administrative tasks, drafting responses to constituent requests and answering phones, assisting with legislative research, exposure to constituent casework, certificates of recognition, working in coordination with the team on various community events, etc.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students can expect to leave with a better understanding of the role of the State Legislature and Government agency, as well as their role in providing essential services to the residents of California. Students will ideally leave with an understanding of how to access publicly available information for research on State-related matters. Additionally, they can expect to learn how to operate in an office environment.

Opportunity Training 

Week 1 is focused on onboarding the student intern, reviewing the e Volunteer/Unpaid Intern Welcome Packet with the Volunteer/Intern on their first day, with specific emphasis on the California Legislature Policy on Appropriate Workplace Conduct: Creating a Culture of Respect, Civility and Diversity and the Workplace Conduct Unit (WCU) information. The next 3 weeks, we will review essential administrative skills: roleplay answering the phones, checking and answering emails via Outlook, how to navigate Microsoft Office software programs, and how to navigate State Legislature specific programs (LCMS). Students will be provided a checklist of essential skills they should know before the end of the program and ensure that they have prior experience to progress onto more hands-on projects under staff supervision.
