Opportunity Summary 

What you will be doing: Lead after school cooking/STEAM classes for elementary students (K-4) while getting them excited about trying fun and creative recipes and or experiments, new foods, and encouraging them to learn about new cuisines and cultures. Teach provided lesson plans related to basics of nutrition and healthy eating to kids in a fun and engaging way Introduce kids to basic cutting and measuring techniques, food safety, table manners and other concepts provided in the curriculum Purchase groceries for each class based on the recipes provided (we reimburse separately for the groceries)

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of their opportunity working as an after-school educator with iCook and iSTEAM, students will gain valuable hands-on experience in both teaching and leadership. They will strengthen skills in classroom management, lesson delivery, and adapting curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners. Educators will develop confidence in engaging groups of elementary-aged students, encouraging curiosity, and fostering a positive learning environment. In addition, they will build transferable skills such as communication, organization, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that are highly applicable to careers in education, youth programming, and beyond. They will also deepen their knowledge of child development, after-school programming, and experiential learning approaches in cooking, nutrition, and STEM/STEAM education.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive comprehensive training to prepare them for their responsibilities as after-school educators with iCook and iSTEAM. Training includes an introduction to our curriculum and teaching philosophy, as well as practical guidance on classroom management, child engagement strategies, and safety procedures. They will also be provided with detailed lesson plans, activity guides, and step-by-step teaching resources to support them in leading classes confidently. In addition, training covers hands-on demonstrations of key program activities, best practices for adapting lessons to different age groups, and tips for fostering a positive, inclusive learning environment. Ongoing support will be available through program coordinators, instructional guides, and team check-ins to ensure students feel confident and well-prepared throughout their teaching experience.
