Theatre Pathways InternshipAt — CCAE Theatricals, Inc.

Opportunity Summary

CCAE Theatricals invites CSU San Marcos students to apply for a hands-on internship in Artistic Production or Arts Education & Engagement, running January 20–May 8, 2026. Interns will work 15–20 hours per week (flexible around class schedules; $20/hour), gaining professional experience in theatre operations while applying classroom learning to real-world projects. Interns will support rehearsals, productions, community programs, and administrative tasks while developing workplace skills such as communication, collaboration, and time management. Additional responsibilities vary by track: Artistic interns may assist with casting, dramaturgy, production management, and play readings, while Education interns may shadow teaching artists, support afterschool programs, and contribute to curriculum and student engagement. All interns participate in professional development modules (résumé building, public speaking, intercultural communication, and more). Select interns may be invited to continue as apprentices for the remainder of 2026, deepening their involvement and preparing for careers as equity-driven arts professionals.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

By the end of this internship, students will be able to: Communicate like a pro: write clear emails, run Zoom/meetings, present to peers and community partners, and give/receive actionable feedback. Navigate a professional rehearsal room: read a script for production, track blocking/props, understand calendars, tech week workflows, cue-to-cue, and backstage etiquette/safety. Manage projects: build simple timelines, agendas, and checklists; coordinate schedules; track tasks; and problem-solve logistics across departments. Apply equity-centered practice: use inclusive language, intercultural communication, and trauma-informed approaches; consider accessibility and universal design in programs and productions. Engage audiences and communities: support talkbacks, create short engagement activities, and understand how theatre fosters belonging and cultural wellness. Use data for improvement: assist with basic evaluation—surveys, observation notes, light analysis—and translate findings into next steps. Build a career toolkit: strengthen résumés/portfolios, practice interviews and networking, and understand nonprofit theatre pathways. Track-Specific Outcomes Artistic Production: assist with casting/dramaturgy, contribute to a production deck, support the TYA tour and play readings, liaise with artists, and document processes you can showcase in a portfolio. Arts Education & Engagement: co-facilitate activities with teaching artists, adapt lesson plans, manage classroom flow, and create audience engagement materials tied to performances. Portfolio Deliverables Students leave with 2–3 polished artifacts (e.g., a lesson/activity plan, dramaturgy packet or production document, engagement one-sheet) plus a professional reference—positioning them for apprenticeships and early-career roles in the field.

Opportunity Training

Interns begin with an orientation (4–6 hours) covering CCAE Theatricals’ mission, workplace expectations, digital tools, and safety procedures. They then receive area-specific training tailored to their placement: artistic interns may be introduced to casting, dramaturgy, and production workflows, while education interns may train in curriculum delivery, classroom management, and culturally responsive pedagogy. In addition, interns participate in weekly professional development modules (1 hour each) on topics such as email and digital etiquette, project planning, intercultural communication, public speaking, and navigating difficult conversations. Training is reinforced through shadowing sessions with professional staff in artistic, production, and education departments. Because interns may work with minors and vulnerable populations in afterschool programs and camps, Mandated Reporter training is required and provided prior to student contact hours. This layered approach ensures students are equipped with both general workplace readiness and the specialized skills needed for their specific theatre assignments.
