VolunteerAt — Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc.

Opportunity Summary

Student volunteers will assist LASSD staff and more experienced volunteers and interns in providing assistance to pro se litigants navigating the California CARE Act.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

The California CARE Act enables people (often loved ones) to request court-ordered treatment, support services, and a housing plan for adults with severe mental illness. The goal of these petitions, and CARE Court more generally, is to help these individuals avoid homelessness, incarceration, and/or institutional abuse. Student volunteers will assist clinic participants seeking to request or respond to a CARE Act Petition onsite at the Vista Courthouse (325 S Melrose Drive, Vista, CA 92081). Volunteers must be available to assist at least one full-day or two half-days per week (for an entire semester) during the clinic's operating hours: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM.

Opportunity Training

Volunteers will be trained onsite by LASSD staff and more experienced volunteers.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Students will be working with the public in a courthouse clinic setting.
