Women & Gender Equity Center InternAt — CSUSM Women and Gender Equity Center
The Women & Gender Equity Center (WGEC) Intern supports initiatives that advance gender equity, social justice, and student empowerment. Interns gain hands-on experience in student affairs by assisting with educational programming, community-building events, outreach, and daily center operations. This role offers opportunities to engage in advocacy work, collaborate with campus partners, and support programs that uplift women, trans, and nonbinary students and student parents. Interns develop professional skills in leadership, communication, event planning, and equity-minded practice while working in a supportive, values-driven environment. The WGEC internship is ideal for students interested in social justice, higher education, community engagement, and creating inclusive campus spaces.
By the end of the WGEC internship, students may acquire the following knowledge and skills: - Equity & Gender Justice Foundations: A stronger understanding of gender equity, intersectionality, and social justice frameworks, including how sexism, misogyny, transphobia, and other systems of oppression shape campus climate and student experiences. Inclusive Programming & Event Planning: Hands-on experience planning and supporting workshops, dialogues, and large-scale events—from concept development and logistics to facilitation support, day-of coordination, and post-event assessment. - Outreach, Marketing, & Engagement: Skills in student-centered outreach and promotional strategy (e.g., tabling, classroom announcements, Canva/Instagram content, flyers), with attention to inclusive language and accessible design. - Communication & Professional Practice: Growth in professional communication (email etiquette, meeting facilitation, front-desk engagement, community guidelines) and confidence collaborating with campus partners and student leaders. - Peer Support & Resource Navigation: Experience connecting students to resources, practicing active listening, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and understanding referral pathways and basic helping skills. - Leadership & Project Management: Development of time management, initiative, reliability, and teamwork through owning tasks, meeting deadlines, and supporting WGEC priorities in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. - Assessment & Reflection: Introduction to evaluating programs (attendance tracking, feedback tools, reflection) and using data to improve student experiences and WGEC services.
