Opportunity Summary 

La Familia Peer Mentors support first-year students by fostering community, connection, and belonging at CSUSM. Mentors serve as guides and role models, offering peer support, facilitating reflective conversations, and helping mentees navigate campus resources while centering identity, culture, and student success.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this opportunity, peer mentors will develop strong leadership, communication, and mentorship skills while supporting first-year students. Mentors will gain experience in peer advising, goal-setting, and facilitating reflective conversations centered on identity, belonging, and student success. Participants will strengthen their cultural competency, active listening, and problem-solving skills, while learning how to navigate campus resources and advocate for students within a Latine-serving, community-centered space. Mentors will also build professional skills in collaboration, facilitation, and community engagement that are transferable to graduate school, student affairs, and other leadership roles.

Opportunity Training 

Students receive a comprehensive, in-person peer mentor training prior to the start of the program, with ongoing support throughout the semester. Training includes an overview of the La Familia mission and vision, expectations of the peer mentor role, goal setting as mentors, and building supportive relationships with mentees. Mentors are trained in professional communication, boundaries, identity-conscious mentorship, and community care. Additional skill-building sessions include presenting and facilitation basics, resume and professional development, and mentor self-care. Mentors also receive continued guidance, check-ins, and resource support from Latinx Center staff throughout the semester.
