Collections and Exhibits InternAt — Maritime Museum of San Diego

Opportunity Summary 

Student will assist staff and work with other volunteers and interns to gain an understanding of the roles and processes involved in managing the museum's collections: artifacts, books, archival documentation and photographs. He will further assist in the curating of a number of temporary exhibits, as well as help with the upgrading of existing displays. This internship will involve some data entry, the learning of basic collections management skills and close cooperation with museum professionals.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Preferred skillset includes: Basic knowledge of Microsoft suite Interest in history, material culture and curated interpretation Able to work alone with regular supervision and also as part of a team

Opportunity Training 

Initial training will include the provision of basic texts for museum and collections management, as well as personal training in data entry and the operation of the museum's collections management software program.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Basic safety training will be provided as well as resources related to the safe handling of collections materials.

Opportunity Application Instructions 

The intern will participate in an oral interview with the supervisor, fill out a museum internship application and also register as a volunteer to log attendance and hours completed.
