Opportunity Summary 

Under the supervision of the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Project Director, the Peer Navigator will provide mentoring support to assigned TRIO Student Support Services participants. The Peer Navigator will communicate and collaborate regularly with the SSS team to develop and support programs such as workshops and other activities that support SSS participants orientation to campus, resource referrals and navigation, sense of belonging, and development of academic skills to ensure participants excel academically, continuously persist, and successfully graduate with their bachelor’s degree. Based on program needs as determined by the TRIO SSS Director, this position may provide front-line support to the TRIO SSS front desk.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Student Engagement & Support Demonstrate effective peer mentoring skills by providing individualized and group support to first-generation, low-income, and/or disabled students. Apply active listening and communication strategies to identify and address the academic and personal needs of TRIO SSS participants. 2. Program Planning & Implementation Assist in the design, coordination, and execution of student support activities, including workshops and special events. Contribute to the development of student-centered programming aimed at enhancing academic skills, sense of belonging, and resource navigation. 3. Professional Communication & Teamwork Communicate professionally with students, staff, and external partners through verbal, written, and digital formats. Collaborate effectively with the TRIO SSS team to support student success initiatives and departmental goals. 4. Administrative & Technical Skills Utilize Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and related software to maintain accurate records, manage files, track student engagement, and perform other administrative tasks. Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with minimal supervision.

Opportunity Training 

* Conduct regular 1:1 meetings to provide mentorship, guidance, and feedback on their performance, goals, and professional development. These meetings will also offer space for reflection on challenges and successes. * Provide training and shadowing opportunities to help the student build confidence and competence in key areas such as mentoring, communication, event planning, and data tracking. * Assign meaningful projects and responsibilities that contribute to the goals of TRIO SSS while also allowing the student to apply and expand their skills. * Monitor progress toward learning outcomes and provide structured opportunities for self-assessment and reflection throughout the internship.
