The student works as a staff member at the Boys & Girls Club, providing direct support and supervision to school-age children. Responsibilities include assisting with homework, leading and facilitating recreational and educational activities, supporting positive behavior, encouraging social-emotional development, and maintaining a safe environment. The student interacts with children individually and in groups while responding to their varying needs and interests. The position also involves collaborating with other BGC staff, following organizational policies and procedures, communicating with supervisors, and contributing to the daily operation of the youth program.
The student hopes to gain a stronger understanding of child development, learning, behavior, and social-emotional development through hands-on experience. The student will develop communication, observation, behavior support, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while working with children with diverse needs. The student also hopes to apply concepts from psychology coursework to real-world experiences, strengthen professional skills, and gain greater confidence working in a youth-focused environment.
