Opportunity Summary 

Position Description

Three types of positions are available:

  1. Academic Tutors/Mentors: Work with students on personal organization, setting academic and personal goals, completing homework and class projects, and understanding academic concepts. Tutors with strong math skills are particularly needed. Extensive orientation and ongoing training is provided. CSUSM students are encouraged to share their (appropriate) college experiences with tutees. Tutoring can occur in a study hall/library setting, regular classroom setting, or individually in an intervention room setting. Available hours are Mondays through Fridays 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. [Successful tutors are encouraged to apply for paid employment upon finishing their community service hours]
  2. After School Program Leaders: CSUSM Service Learning students may choose an area of interest to teach to students in an after school setting. The students would be responsible to set up learning objectives and a plan to teach students the new skill set, recruit students , and encourage student leadership of the club. Past clubs have included a DJ club, robotics club, bicycling, and Frisbee golf club. OGHS students are interested in and need people to teach: basic coding, video game design, computer science concepts, robotics, and maker space. Funding may be available for materials and events.
  3. Attendance Intervention Intern: We will accept 2-3 students interested in working directly with the attendance coordinator in helping students and families improve their attendance. This position involves participating in parent and student conferences, problem solving with families, home visits, Youth Court, SARB hearings, and court appearances. The intern may also perform administrative work such as making phone calls (supervised), sending letters, and compiling data. The intern will also interact with various community agencies, the Escondido Police Department, and social workers. This internship is ideal for students considering careers as School Social Workers.

We will schedule an interview at Orange Glen High School in Escondido

Successful candidates will go through the hiring process for the Escondido Union High School District, which includes:

  • Background check (fingerprinting)
  • TB test
  • Drug screening (yes, marijuana use is disqualifying)

Interns will then go through a training program (6 hours), after which they will begin to work with students under supervision.

 

Comments

Scheduling is highly flexible. Intern positions may work Mondays - Fridays 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The school desires interns to stay with the school site throughout their CSUSM career to optimize the student's experience. Internships are individually tailored to meet the learning needs and goals of the student.
