Opportunity Summary 

Our program is located in Modesto in our Behavioral Health Department. The position is 16-24 hours per week. Interns receive a stipend for their services of $5,500. Training includes placement in an adult or child treatment track in an outpatient behavioral health clinic providing individual and group therapy. Internships begin with onboarding and shadowing and transition into providing direct patient care. Selection of clinical cases and caseload are adjusted according to the intern’s readiness as determined by their supervisor. Preference is given to applicants in their second year of training and those who have completed prior field experience delivering outpatient psychotherapy services. Prior academic instruction in the following areas is required: Mental Status Evaluation, Mandated Reporting, Suicide/Homicide/Danger Assessment, Domestic Violence, Professional Ethics, DSM Diagnoses/Psychopathology, Personality and Psychological Development, Theory and Practice of Psychotherapy, and Chemical Dependency.

Opportunity Training 

Pre-master's practicum interns receive one hour of individual supervision, 2 hours of group supervision, 2 hours of didactic training, and 2 hours of clinical case conference with a multidisciplinary team each week. Interns are also invited to attend a monthly virtual regional expert speaker series during the training year. The Pre-Master’s Mental Health Internship typically begins with an onboarding and shadowing process and transitions into opportunities for interns to engage in direct patient care in both individual and group settings, as well as participate in weekly individual and group supervision and regional virtual didactic seminars in a supportive and structured environment. Interns are also invited to attend a monthly virtual regional expert speaker series during the training year. Selection of clinical cases and size of the caseload are adjusted according to the Pre-Master’s Mental Health Intern’s readiness as determined by the training supervisor. Training is organized in a sequential, cumulative, and graded manner. The intern and supervisor review the intern’s progress on an ongoing basis to ensure that all training goals are met, and that the intern is sufficiently guided through the professional development process.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Pre-master's practicum interns typically provide care to patients with mild to moderate symptoms or distress associated with various mental health conditions. Interns are provided with suicide risk assessment and safety planning training prior to any work with patients, and they have access to support from training faculty throughout their program.
