Collection Management and Research Support InternAt — City of Modesto

Opportunity Summary 

This internship is for students interested in developing skills in record processing and management, exhibition design and community engagement. Intern projects are designed to benefit both the Institution and complement the intern's own interests, skills, and experience.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will have learned the basics skills for processing museum acquisitions and continued collection management. Students will have learned the basics of exhibition design and information presentation through active involvement in the curation process. Students will have learned techniques to engage community members through marketing, docenting, public presentations, and/or hands-on program implementation.

Opportunity Training 

Students interested in collection management will receive trainings on proper procedure for accessioning incoming donations, this will include one-on-one walkthroughs of the process, training on collection management software, and written material/presentations for reference and support. Interns will receive at least 4 in-depth training sessions, which will include close supervision and hands-on practice before working independently. Interns focusing on exhibition design and research will receive trainings on design standards, ADA compliance in design, proper techniques for handling artifacts, and installation/deinstallation. Interns will support museum staff with research for exhibitions and will have hands on experience with the exhibition design process. Trainings will range in length and type from independent learning with presentations and texts to supervised hands-on practice with artifact. Students interested in community engagement will receive a one-on-one docent training which typically lasts about two hours. Students will also be trained on proper public interactions, guest relations, and program design/implantation. These trainings will last between 1-4 hours and will be led by Museum staff or done independently through review of written material or recorded presentation.

Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting for long periods of time; occasional bending or squatting. Lifting: frequently up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds. frequent reading and close-up work. Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: temperatures inside the museum vary based on location and time of year (historic building).
