Opportunity Summary

Join us as we support elementary-aged youth through mentoring! We are looking for volunteer adult mentors who can mentor for one hour, once a week at one of 8 school sites within Modesto City School district. One hour sessions range from 9am and end at 4:45pm. The core of our mentoring program hinges on filling in gaps through relationship. Often, what students need is a listening, encouraging ear and a healthy role model. This is where we come in.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Using a SEL lens, students will be trauma-informed, hone active-listening skills, and learn to guide with an empathetic viewpoint and framework. Students will have a greater level of confidence in dealing with a wide variety of viewpoints and demographics realistic to our community. Several of our volunteer mentors decide to pursue continued education in a mental-health or education related field.

Opportunity Training

Students will receive a 3-hour training that includes developmental vs. prescriptive, trauma informed, unconscious expectations, active listening and empathic, non-judgmental perspective taking. Students will also learn want warrants mandated reporting and "red flags" to report to the facilitator/site specialist.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Every school site has a safety protocol for lockdowns, fire drills, natural disasters, etc. Facilitators/site specialists will walk any volunteers through these should they arise at the school campus.
