TESOL Graduate InternshipAt — College of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Opportunity Summary

The site offers strong potential for educationally appropriate experiences by providing opportunities to observe authentic classroom instruction in linguistics within a TESOL context. Through this internship/service learning experience, the graduate student can connect theoretical knowledge from their writing and TESOL coursework to real teaching practices, including how linguistic concepts are introduced, scaffolded, and applied. Observing these classes will support the student’s academic development by deepening their understanding of pedagogical strategies and informing their own future teaching practice.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

During the experience, the graduate student will observe multiple linguistics classes to analyze teaching strategies, classroom dynamics, and approaches to language instruction. They will complete observation reports, maintain a reflective journal connecting practice to second language acquisition theory, and design two lesson plans that adapt observed strategies to their own teaching context. The experience culminates in a reflective essay that evaluates their growth and applies theoretical frameworks to practice. This placement requires strong academic writing skills, familiarity with TESOL and second language acquisition concepts, and the ability to engage in critical reflection and analysis.
