Opportunity Summary

Students engaging in this opportunity will be trained by Turlock Irrigation District (TID) staff and function as a guest lecturer in K-12 classrooms. As a lecturer you will primarily provide students with an education in the science of Central Valley salmon management and the five basic functions of rim dams: flood control, irrigation, hydroelectric generation, recreation and fishery management. TID’s modern practices in the subjects of flood control, irrigation and fishery management can be nested nicely with climate action and food insecurity. TID’s Hydrology Department is setting the bar regarding modeling the effects of our changing climate on flood control and sustainable use of water. TID’s innovation has led to shading of irrigation canals with solar panels, conserving water and generating electricity locally. TID’s Aquatic Resources Department is in the process of restoring the Tuolumne River providing climate resilience and increased salmon populations.

Opportunity Training

30-40 hours of training would be required - September to October, 60-120 hours of actual teaching could be aquired October March. Possibly more if desired.
