2024-2025 Opportunity Summary
The North County Outreach Initiative (NCOI) provides CSUSM service learning students with an opportunity to tutor/mentor two-three K-5 children in greatest need in a safe, nurturing environment at Maryland Elementary, 700 North Avenue, Vista CA 92083
We welcome community service learning volunteers to engage in a mutually beneficial partnership in the following areas: reading, English language development, BASIC math, social emotional learning, character formation, enrichment clubs and activities (soccer, basketball, dance)
Focus on English Learners
There is a strategic focus on supporting English learners, especially newcomers to the school environment.
Spanish fluent service learning students and interns serve as mentors, helping newcomers one-on-one and in small groups throughout the semester. They help with parent conference translations and home-school communication with families.
In-school Service Learning Opportunities
Mondays-Fridays
8:30-2:00 PM
Service learning students can serve 2 or more hours each week one or more times per week based on their school and work schedules.
Lunch Hour Playground Activities Support
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays
11:00-1:00 PM
Service learning students assist with playground activities: social emotional learning groups, soccer, basketball.
After School Tutoring/Mentoring and After School Clubs

Service learning students may combine after school clubs with in school tutoring on Wednesdays and after school tutoring on Thursdays to serve 2 or more hours/week.
Impact
Community service learning volunteers gain invaluable experience serving alongside dedicated and experienced teachers, counselors, and educational leaders.
Our Maryland teaching and leadership team welcomes service learning students and interns as vital role models who are helping to empower our children to learn and grow as never before.

Community Service Learning Students will:
- Develop expertise in helping struggling readers with basic reading, English language development and/or basic math using research-based resources.
- Develop understanding expertise in engaging children in character formation activities that strengthen a child's socio-emotional skills.
Students will go through Safe Schools training and socio-emotional learning certification.
