Sports Performance InternAt — CSUF - Athletics
We are currently accepting applications for volunteer internship positions. These are positions for the Fall 2024 semester, with the opportunity to stay longer. This position is UNPAID but does offer the opportunity for advancement in the field of strength and conditioning/sports performance, as well as the fulfillment of internship credit hours towards a degree program.
The volunteer workload consists of assisting the sports performance staff with the implementation of their programs, set up and break down of all training sessions, as well as maintenance and upkeep of the weight room and facility.
Required qualifications include completion or current pursuit of an undergraduate degree in exercise science or a related course of study, a desire to become a strength and conditioning professional, and a strong work ethic.
Enrollment at CSUF is not mandatory. Preferred qualifications include certification from a recognized governing body (NSCA, CSCCa, USAW), previous coaching experience and proficiency in teaching and performing the Olympic movements.
Tasks:
- Assisting in coaching of Division-I student-athletes, under the supervision of full and part-time staff members
- Opportunity to lead components of weight training sessions under the supervision of full and part-time staff members
- Preparation for relevant certification exams in sports performance (CSCS/SCCC)
- Completion of hands-on education sessions, as well as internship assignments regarding continuing education, coaching and program design
- Facility upkeep and maintenance
- Set-up and breakdown of team training sessions
Training:
The majority of the training will be shadowing full and part-time coaches on the weight room floor, with the opportunity for increased coaching
and leadership responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the Director and Assistant Director of Sports Performance. Students will also participate in weekly continuing education meetings with corresponding assignments geared towards applying and demonstrating gained knowledge from the respective education session.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship the student will have an increased knowledge of strength and conditioning program design, speed and power development, interpersonal relation skills as a coach, professional development for job interviews, as well as applied knowledge of the exercise sciences.
Students will need the capacity to lift weights of 50lbs+ occasionally. A briefing on weight room safety will be utilized.<\/p>
