Journalism InternAt — NothingMag.TV
Nothing Mag is an independent media outlet that caters to the DIY music and art community. We are a vibrant and rapidly growing music media outlet dedicated to promoting and uplifting our local music and art community. We strive to be a leading platform for music enthusiasts and emerging talent alike. We uplift and cultivate our community through our annual festivals, concerts, magazines and event coverage that we produce.
We are seeking motivated interns who want to gain hands-on experience and further develop their skills in Marketing, Social Media, Journalism, Publishing, Graphic Design, and Film. Must be passionate about music, community, and uplifting artists as our work revolves around these principles.
What we're looking for:
- Strong writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Familiarity with AP style and the ability to adhere to editorial guidelines.
- A passion for music journalism and enthusiasm for discovering new artists.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments.
- Proficiency in MS Office and Google Suite.
Responsibilities:
- Researching and writing articles on music news, album reviews, emerging artists, the local community, and other relevant topics.
- Conducting interviews with musicians and industry professionals.
- Pitching and developing compelling story ideas to captivate our audience.
- Assisting in proofreading and fact-checking articles before publication.
- Collaborating with team members to produce high-quality content for Nothing Mag platforms and magazine.
Training:
Upon position acceptance, the student will go through an orientation in which they will get an overview of the organization, their responsibilities, and the semester plan. The students will have mandatory weekly meetings where they will be expected to pitch articles and go over previously submitted work. Students will be expected to edit their peers' work for style, grammar, spelling, and fact-checking. Their advisor/editor will also overview their students' work before edits are made. Students will then receive personal feedback on where they need to improve (e.g. active voice, repeated AP style errors, poor interview questions, etc.). Students will also be required to attend workshops where they will learn interviewing skills, how to upload their work to the website using WordPress, and how to design magazine spreads on Adobe InDesign. Students will also have the opportunity to attend other team workshops from the social media, photography, and video teams. Their supervisor will also be available outside of weekly meeting times for extra help and/or guidance.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to design magazine spreads, write in a magazine format, conduct compelling interviews, and expand their multimedia journalism skills.
