As an Emergency Medical Technician you will be required to respond to 911 or IFT calls for emergency medical assistance, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or bandaging a wound. EMTs are required to assess a patient’s condition and determine a proper course of treatment. You will provide first-aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured patients. Patient care will also incorporate those with psychiatric issues or behavior abnormalities.
Additionally, it will be your responsibility to transport patients safely in an ambulance. After transporting patients, you will need to ensure proper and appropriate transfer of care to the receiving emergency department of a hospital or other healthcare facility. Proper transfer of care will include ensuring the patient is at the appropriate facility for their situation: labor and delivery, trauma, psychiatric, burn, and many other units. Upon assessment and treatment you must report any observations and treatment to physicians, nurses, or other healthcare facility staff. Documentation of medical care given to patients is required for all and every service provided from the very start of the call until the very end when patient care is transferred. Lastly,
you must ensure that inventory is replaced and supplies and equipment cleaned after each use.

Training:

Training at Premier Ambulance includes a mandatory 3 day orientation, lasting 8 hours each day. Following orientation, there will be a mandatory two day training out on the field with an assigned Field Training Officer. Each training shift will last around 8-12 hours each day. This training is mandatory and required for every BLS operating unit. Additional training may be required for ALS and CCT units.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to incorporate theory and apply it to real world situations. Additionally, the student will have developed appropriate attitudes and work habits needed for job success. Lastly, the student will be able to acquire employment contacts that will lead to a full-time position following completion of the internship or graduation.
