Description
The Clinical Care Extender/PrepStep-Health Care Scholar program gives pre-health professionals unprecedented access to direct patient care. Program participants become valuable members of the patient-care team alongside nurses, physicians and allied health professionals in clinical and administrative settings. Program participants receive training to assist in basic patient-care tasks such as bathing, changing and feeding patients as they rotate among the different departments within the hospital. For instance, participants may have the opportunity to serve in areas such as the emergency department, observe surgeries performed in the operating rooms, witness babies being born in labor & delivery or participate in hospital projects.
Description of Tasks
Clinical Care Extender Requirements:
Individuals must be 18 years or older
Accepted, currently enrolled in or graduated from an accredited college or university
Complete online application and interview process
If accepted, attend the Immunization Open House at the Pipeline site and submit required immunization/ health records before attending mandatory training
Attend mandatory 3-day training
Pass post-training exams
Clinical Care Extender Program Schedule Requirements:
Serve a minimum of four to six hours per week, depending on internship site. Most departments are open 7am-11pm
Attend all bi-monthly Clinical Care Extender meetings
Accumulate a total of 280 internship hours. Most interns take approximately 15 months to complete this minimum hours requirement, however others complete it earlier by volunteering more shifts per week.
Accelerated 3-month track available during summer and currently offered only at select Pipeline sites
Training
• Selected applicants will be required to attend a three-day training, held on weekends, in the month before the rotation is scheduled to begin.
• Training consists of both hands-on and didactic education covering: infection control, patient-care techniques, customer service, cultural competency, confidentiality, introduction to patient-care team, and much more.
• Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to successfully complete training.
1. Multiple choice exam – pass with at least an 80%
2. Practical exam – pass with at least an 80%
