Athletic Training Student InternAt — Golden West College
This position is open to interns interested in the field of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. Interns will work directly with a Certified Athletic Trainer and observe the day-to-day duties, both in clinic and on-court. Interns will learn various clinical and emergency care skills such as, but not limited to:
- First-Aid
- Injury Rehabilitation/Treatment Techniques
- Basic Injury Evaluation
- General Athletic Taping
- Emergency Care
- Biomechanics
If the intern so wishes, he/she may also be introduced to other healthcare professionals that collaborate directly with the Athletic Trainers. These healthcare professionals include: team physicians, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and chiropractors.
1. General Athletic Taping (hand, wrist, finger, ankle, knee, and arches)
2. Learn set-up and reasoning for use of modalities (Electrical stimulation, Ultrasound, Cupping, Active release techniques, and Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization)
3. Basic first-aid (wound care)
Training:
Interns will be required to complete the following training:
1. Initial orientation
2. Schedule days and times for consistent weekly clinical hours
3. Shadow a Certified Athletic Trainer for both clinical and on-field coverage
Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand basic day-to-day aspects of the profession of Athletic Training
2. Evaluate and understand basic biomechanics and rules of various sports
3. Learn common athletic injuries and reasons they occur in their respective sports
4. Learn basic treatment modalities and reasons for their use
