Museum Archive InternAt — 70 Degrees
We offer an Archive Internship in Orange County, CA. You will learn Omeka, a collection management system. We work with physical and digital collections. You will learn the process of creating inventory lists, building collections, and adding them to a database. We are designing community exhibits which utilize these resources. You will be a part of the research and development team. We outline some of our projects at https://70degrees.org/services/archive.
Additionally, we are adding new content to museum collections. We specialize in oral history methods and public history projects. You will help us digitize and process archival materials.
Desired Skills and Expertise
- Interest in local history
- Detailed oriented
- Research and writing skills
- Experience using a collection management systems preferred (ArchivesSpace, CollectionSpace, CONTENTdm, Omeka, PastPerfect Museum Collection Software)
- Willing to learn Dublin Core metadata elements and can contribute to processing metadata to digital collections
- Willing to learn Describing Archives: A Content Standard, Second Edition (DACS)
Optional Skills and Expertise
- Would like to help us create 2D and 3D renderings of physical artifacts (help us print objects for public educational programs); see Smithsonian 3D for samples
- Familiar with curatorial duties and interest to develop exhibition schedule
- Preservation and conservation treatment plans for archival materials
Tasks:
You will upload metadata to a database, take object photos, research history of artifacts, and contribute to exhibitions.
Training:
Training will be provided. Best practices with archives and exhibitions are established by the National Archives. Learn why collections are maintained at 70 Degrees.

- Google Classroom Assignments
- In-person, hybrid, and virtual workshops with partners
- Oral History workshop
- Graphics Atlas workshop for an object-based approach with the identification of prints and photographs.
- The student will shadow the organization's Archivist. They will have weekly performance meetings.
Learning Outcome:
As a team, we will research artifacts and photographs. You will learn how to contribute to an archive system. Learn how archives become public displays. Our team develops virtual and physical exhibitions with these resources.
