POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Communications & Marketing Intern
Division: Communications
Reports to: Director of Communications
Status: Internship (Unpaid)
General Summary:
Alzheimer’s Orange County is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to support its communications department. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of communications while working for a well-established nonprofit organization.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop content and provide writing support for promotional materials including electronic newsletters, web site, social media, and blog
- Log and track organization’s print activities
- Log and track organization’s PR activities
- Conduct research and collect analytics related to our marketing activities and content
- Design flyers, graphics and other marketing materials
- And other tasks as needed
Minimum Requirements:
- Completed or working toward a Bachelor degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Marketing, Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations or Advertising)
- Possess excellent writing skills
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Possess basic graphic design knowledge (basic proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Canva highly desired)
- Possess understanding of basic marketing and PR principles
- Knowledge of content management systems, Hootsuite and basic video production/photography skills a plus
- Ability to represent the Alzheimer’s Orange County in a professional manner
- Ability to travel as needed to perform job duties
- Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish/English a plus but not required

TASKS:
- Develop content and provide writing support for promotional materials including electronic newsletters, web site, social media, and blog
- Monitor the organizations social media presence and feedback
- Research and identify new and ongoing social media and other marketing trends
- Design graphics, flyers and other types of marketing materials
- Conduct research and collect analytics related to our marketing activities and content
- Catalog, track and update the organization's media coverage and PR activities
- Work on other related tasks and projects as necessary
Training:
Weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings and opportunities to attend team and department meetings to discuss and carry out tasks and projects as it relates to the Communications department
Job shadowing with mentor and other staff
Provision of work samples and templates related to tasks or work assigned. For example, copies of past press releases. blogs or templates for existing types of content or series.
Access to training videos and webinars
Supplying an intern guide/manual to give a general overview of the organization, outline expectations and other information to become better familiar with our brand and who we are
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this academic internship, the student will be able to :
- Learn and apply content-creating skills to support the organizations promotional efforts and objectives
- Participate in various aspects of communications and event planning activities and tasks within an established nonprofit organization
- Gain a better understanding of marketing, PR and branding principles and how to collaborate with others to achieve the desired objectives
- Utilize tools and software required to maintain and organize the Communications department’s workflow and content creation (Airtable, Canva, Adobe InDesign, Asana, Hootsuite, etc)
