Internship with High school coach - Savanna High SchoolAt — Anaheim Union High School District
120 hours by the end of the summer with a high school coach at Savanna High School.
Tasks:
The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by....
1. arriving early to the gym, unlocking all doors, locker rooms, and equipment cabinets.
2. arriving with an open mind to make adjustments to the practice plan.
3. developing a practice plan that fulfills the allotted time slot.
4. breaking down volleyball skills, providing specific techniques to help athletes improve.
5. monitoring the well-being of athletes, making sure they take in enough fluids and oversee any injury that occurs.
6. closing up the gym in the appropriate manner by checking all the doors and locker rooms before leaving.
Training:
The intern and I will meet daily, before camp and after camp. Before camp will be utilized to review practice plans and go over ideas for the camp that day. This is an opportunity for the intern to first watch how I develop my practice plan, execute the plan and make adjustments throughout the day. At the end of camp, we will meet again to review how the day went. We can move players to different teams, analyze what drills worked and didn't work. This allows for us to have a discussion and for her to observe how I start to think about the next day and plan accordingly. In this setting, there is a lot of modeling. While the intern is shadowing, she will be able to learn from a number of demonstrations provided by me. Anytime, there is a group/team meeting that I lead, she will be a part of it. On the first day in the gym, we will review safety procedures. This includes identifying the location of the fire extinguisher, the AED unit, location of the athletic trainer's office, offices for both athletic directors and ensuring that she has contact information for all of those people.
Learning outcome:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to run her own athletic summer camp. She will be knowledgeable on how to communicate with students and their parents, how to develop and execute a detailed practice plan but also be flexible to make adjustments. The intern will also have practiced reflecting at the end of the day. The reflection part allows for the intern to evaluate how well the practice plan met the needs of the athletes. The reflection provides an opportunity to identify strengths and weaknesses in one's planning and performing of the tasks at hand. The intern will be able to communicate the plan to the large group of athletes. She will learn to be prepared and detailed so that there is an overall understanding by the athletes.
