The Marketing and Events Internship offers students the opportunity to collaborate with the Parenting OC Magazine staff by contributing their writing, social media savvy, marketing and events interest, and creativity.
This position is for 10-12 hours a week and will allow the student to contribute in the following ways:
Tasks:
Writing: Students will be asked to contribute to each monthly issue of the Parenting OC Magazine in sections such as: POC Community, Calendar Listing, by providing pieces written and edited by themselves.
Social Media: Students will have the opportunity to assist with social media on our platforms: FB, IG, Twitter, by creating content, and creatively contributing to the Parenting OC narrative alongside the Marketing and Events Coordinator and Editor.
Event Planning:
If we have an event the student will have helped the team stuff bags with inserts, file contracts, make name tags, handle mailing, email clients and participants, all while learning about the event and event planning as a whole.
MISC: Making phone calls, putting together mailing, letters, magazine issues, prizes, and other marketing/advertising materials.
Training:
Included in training:
- One-on-one mentorship meetings with Publisher and Marketing and Events Coordinator.
- Job shadowing with Marketing and Events Coordinator
- General Employer Orientation
- Consistent q&a opportunities with all staff (Publisher, Editor, Advertising Reps, Art Director, Marketing Coordinator)
- Contextualization and walkthrough of all tasks the student completes.
- Explaining the full importance and significance of the work the student will complete.
- Verbal outline of tasks, with how to effectively complete them: what's required, why it matters, what will their effort produce, how that helps the team as a whole.
Learning Outcome:
After the student completes their internship with Parenting OC, the student will have earned further experience with hard skills that prepare them for the workforce, such as: Excel, writing, and editing.
The student will also have gained more experience with soft skills, including teamwork and collaboration, customer service, detail management, and phone etiquette, as well as interpersonal communication.
By the end of this internship, the student will have seen event planning come to fruition. Taking part in the event planning and execution, our internship will have offered the opportunity to see all aspects of multiple events, and will have allowed the student to contribute to the process.
Working closely with our Editor, the student will have had the opportunity to showcase their writing work and potentially be published in our monthly issue.
