Opportunity Summary 

DIRC Student Assistants are valued members of the DIRC team who serve as liaisons between the student body and the Department and play a vital role in fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment. DIRC Student Assistants engage in and support work that fulfills the mission, vision, and values of the Department, Division of Human Resources, Diversity and Inclusion, and CSUF. As students themselves, Student Assistants are uniquely positioned to support decreasing barriers to access for students of color and underserved communities. They are vital to providing insight into student interests, perceptions, and experiences, as well as participating in the designing, implementation, and assessment of DIRC programs, events, and initiatives. Through feedback sessions, focus groups, leadership, team and departmental meetings, monthly reports, and more, student assistants will have a variety of ways to share their perspectives and what they have learned from their peers with the Department and Division. Student Assistants will be provided opportunities to engage in training and education to advance their own personal, professional, leadership, and identity development while also serving their communities and gaining experience to add to their resumes.

The goal of the Communications Student Assistant is to support the department by creating graphics, marketing materials, and social media engagement and also by promoting the programs, events, initiatives and services the department offers. By creating culturally sensitive and engaging content and utilizing creative and relevant communication channels, the Communications Student Assistant is able to elevate the visibility of the department and increase its reach across campus to students.

Learning Outcomes  

  1. Engage fellow students across various programs, years, and backgrounds to gather diverse perspectives.
    2. Create engaging and accessible content such as social media content, website content, marketing and promotional materials, and more.
    3. Create new ways of engaging with the student population and provide insight into the best strategies to use for outreach, marketing, and promotion

Training  

  1. Meet with student one on one on a weekly basis to provide feedback and direction.
    2. Provide student with trainings to engage with different tools as related to their communications role.
    3. Connect student to campus partners and students to data and feedback on how to engage them.

Tasks/Duties  

25% Student Engagement and Perspective:

  • Actively engage with fellow students across various programs, years, and backgrounds to gather diverse perspectives in compliance with departmentally approved strategies.
    \u25cf Attend other CSUF events as assigned to gain insight into the student experience and interests.
    \u25cf Stay up to date on trends and happenings on campus that are of interest to students.
    \u25cf Provide ideas and feedback on programs, events, and initiatives that would be relevant and impactful to the student body and on strategies to outreach to students to promote programs and events alongside how to motivate participation.
    \u25cf Gain insight and feedback from students who participate in DIRC activities, programs, and initiatives to provide to the team to enhance the work through a number of departmental feedback mechanisms.

20% Social Media and Communications:

  • Support the Coordinator/Assistant Director to create an engaging and interactive social media and online presence.
    \u25cf Continuously stay up to date on social media trends that can be utilized to support the department's goals.
    \u25cf Support the Coordinator/Assistant Director and Associate Director to create, monitor, track, assess, and adapt communications plans.
    \u25cf Attend campus and department events to support creating online content such as videos, live streams, photos, etc.
    \u25cf Support event promotion by submitting events to various campus systems such as Titan Link, 25 Live, and more.
    \u25cf Stay aware of all relevant campus, division, and department rules, regulations, policies and best practices as it relates to social media and communications.
    \u25cf Attend training, meetings, and self paced learning to enhance needed skills related to Social Media and Communications.

40% Graphic Design and Marketing:

  • Create engaging and accessible content such as social media content, website content, marketing and promotional materials, and more.
    \u25cf Support the management and archiving of digital items on Canva, DropBox, Drive, and other tools.
    \u25cf Stay aware of the best practices in terms of accessibility and graphic design.
    \u25cf Ensure adherence to marketing materials and CSUF branding guidelines.
    \u25cf Creatively create new ways of engaging with the student population and provide insight into the best strategies to use for outreach, marketing, and promotion.
    \u25cf Attend training, meetings, and self-paced learning to enhance needed skills related to Graphic Design and Marketing.

15% General Duties and Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Attend team meetings, individual supervision meetings, and departmental meetings.
    \u25cf Support the operations and coverage of the centers.
