Opportunity Summary 

Intern will support faculty author in promoting and marketing a book publishing by an academic press. Intern will learn about the academic publishing and book promotion process. They will develop skills in online research, marketing, and social media outreach. Intern will gain experience in professional communications and project management through relationship-building with academic publishers, professional associations, media outlets, universities, and other entities.

Learning Outcomes  

  1. Research local, regional, and national organizations that could be target audiences for book promotion
    2. Correspond with faculty, publishers, and organization staff to promote publications
    3. In consultation with the internship coordinator, organize one to two promotional events
    4. Create and distribute social media marketing posts (Instagram, X, etc.)
    5. Reflect on their experiences over the semester

Training  

  1. Collaborate with supervisor to determine ideal audiences, the scaffold up to independent research into target organizations and individuals
    2. Co-draft and revise emails with supervisor and review professional communication styles and guidelines
    3. Collaborative brainstorming of event ideas, draft event agenda together, guide in detailed planning
    4. Receive mentoring from HSS social media staff
    5. Provide specific prompt for reflective essay and feedback as needed

Tasks/Duties  

  1. Assemble list of target organizations and media, which we will review and refine together
    2. Draft own initial email, review and revise with supervisor
    3. Event post-mortems to assess what went well and areas for improvement
    4. Creating and sharing original social media content
    5. Drafting brief reflective essay to be assessed by AMST Internship Coordinator
