EMT InternAt — Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital
The EMT's in our emergency department assist nurses and doctors to provide patient care within their scope of practice. EMTs specialize in first aid, ranging from wound care, EKGs, splinting, and vital signs.
Tasks
The student will be able to perform an EKG examination, clean and dress wounds/burns, check blood glucose levels, apply splints, and perform CPR.
Training
The training required was an extensive 2 week orientation where experienced EMTs showed newly hired EMTs everything they would be using in their daily tasks. Afterwards, the EMTs spent the next 3 weeks working with a one on one trainer to assist them with any questions that arose while working.
Learning Outcomes
The student will learn many aspects of patient care, including interacting & empathizing with patients and tending to their needs. The student will also be able to practice useful skills such as checking vital signs and proper wound care.
There are Public Safety Officers on every major entrance and exit of the hospital and throughout the patient care areas. Parking facilities have cameras and there are secured parking garages for workers. Any worker\/intern may ask for an escort from a Public Safety Officer if needed.
