Intensive Outpatient Program InternAt — Advances and Breakthroughs in Mental Health

Opportunity Summary 

The IOP Intern will gain an introduction to the field of mental health and/or chemical dependency treatment by working closely with our multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of high-quality care to our clients. This internship provides hands-on experience, offering an opportunity to apply academic knowledge in a real-world clinical setting. The intern will assist with various aspects of the program, including group therapy sessions and administrative tasks. The intern will also have opportunities to observe and assist with additional tasks, such as case management, treatment plans, and intake assessments. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Group Counseling Support:
    • Observe a mental health, chemical dependency, or adolescent therapeutic group ran by a counselor at least 1x a week
    • Articulate client progress notes using clinical language to document assigned group session
    • Contribute to group therapy by creating a psychoeducation to present in group

  • Administrative Tasks:
    • Clerical tasks such as filing, organizing, and sorting client charts
    • Ensure electronic client documentation is accessible, accurate, and complete

  • Case Management:
    • Observe intake assessments performed on clients upon admission into program, gaining insight to the initial evaluation process
    • Assist in developing individualized treatment plans for clients in program
    • Assist in creating discharge plans for clients

IOP Intern will be supervised by Diane Alzina, CADC I.

Training:

The IOP Intern will mandated to attend an orientation prior to starting. The orientation will cover policies and procedures as well as provide a general overview of assigned tasks. The IOP Intern will also be provided with step by step instructions, guidelines, descriptive tips, and work samples to support their acclimation to work demands. The IOP Intern will also check-in with their supervisor once a week, and supervise a counselor in group to observe the functions of counseling.

Learning outcome:

- Gain an understanding of the examination of feelings and emotions in relation to treatment planning
- Gain an understanding of group facilitation and counseling for the treatment of mental health, chemical dependency and/or adolescents
- Develop clinical documentation skills through completing clinical session notes
