Opportunity Summary 

The Student Intern will assist in various classroom functions under the guidance of the lead teacher, gaining hands-on experience in supporting students and implementing instructional strategies. The intern will primarily focus on assisting students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), supporting classroom management, and helping to create an inclusive and effective learning environment. This position is designed to help students pursuing a teaching career develop key skills and experience that align with their academic and professional goals in education.

Tasks:

Assisting Students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans):
The student will work alongside teachers to support students with special needs, providing individualized assistance as outlined in their IEPs. This may include helping with accommodations, modifying assignments, and supporting social-emotional development.

Supporting Classroom Functions:
The student will assist in various aspects of classroom management and instruction, such as preparing materials, helping with instructional activities, monitoring student progress, and supporting a positive classroom environment. The student may also assist in organizing group activities or leading small group instruction under the guidance of the teacher.

Logging Hours for EDSC Courses:
The student will track and log their hours spent engaging in teaching and related activities to meet the requirements of their EDSC (Educational Studies) courses. These hours will be documented to ensure the completion of necessary practicum and fieldwork hours, contributing to their academic progress and teacher preparation.

Training:

Job Shadowing and Observation:
Students will have the opportunity to shadow experienced teachers and observe classroom instruction, learning how to implement various teaching strategies, manage a classroom, and engage students effectively. Observations will focus on best practices for teaching students with diverse learning needs, particularly those with IEPs.

Learning Outcome:

Support Students with Special Needs:
Demonstrate the ability to provide individualized support to students with IEPs, including implementing accommodations, modifying assignments, and applying strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of students in the classroom.

Assist with Classroom Management and Instruction:
Effectively assist in classroom management and instructional activities, including preparing learning materials, supporting small group instruction, and utilizing various teaching strategies to engage students and maintain a positive learning environment.

Track and Reflect on Professional Development:
Log and document hours accurately for EDSC courses while reflecting on personal teaching growth, identifying strengths and areas for improvement in instructional practices, and applying feedback from mentor meetings to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Collaborate with Educators in a Professional Setting:
Work collaboratively with teachers and staff to plan and execute instructional activities, demonstrating the ability to engage in professional discussions about curriculum, student progress, and instructional strategies.

Implement Effective Teaching Strategies:
Apply key pedagogical principles, such as differentiation, formative assessment, and inclusive teaching practices, to meet the diverse needs of students, particularly those with special education requirements.
