Dr. Asya Harrison is seeking a dedicated Undergraduate Course Assistant (UCA) to support her Black Psychology class at CSU Fullerton. This role is open to students who have previously taken the course and owned a B+ or higher. The UCA will be responsible for:
Grading assignments, including reading annotations, a paper, and in-class poster sessions.
Organizing the Canvas course to align with the syllabus.
Answering student questions and engaging with students.
Leading study sessions for exams.
Attending class to stay refreshed on the material and assisting with organizational tasks during lectures.
This position is ideal for students with strong organizational skills, an interest in Black psychology, and a passion for supporting their peers.
Learning Outcomes
Develop Organizational and Administrative Skills:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to effectively manage course materials and align digital platforms, such as Canvas, with the course syllabus to support streamlined course operations.
Enhance Pedagogical Skills:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to lead study sessions, clarify course content, and foster an engaging learning environment for peers.
Improve Assessment and Feedback Proficiency:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to evaluate student assignments (e.g., reading annotations, essays, and presentations) and provide constructive feedback that supports academic growth.
Strengthen Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to effectively address questions from students, interact professionally with course participants, and facilitate discussions on course topics.
Deepen Understanding of Black Psychology:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to deepen their knowledge of Black Psychology by revisiting course content and integrating it with practical teaching experiences.
Training
Rubric-Based Training Sessions:
To help the student achieve the learning outcomes, I will conduct weekly meetings to train the UCA on how to evaluate assignments using detailed grading rubrics, ensuring consistency and fairness in assessment.
Feedback and Reflection:
To help the student achieve the learning outcomes, I will provide regular feedback on the UCA’s grading, facilitation of study sessions, and other tasks, fostering reflection and continuous improvement.
Teaching Strategy Discussions:
To help the student achieve the learning outcomes, I will share effective teaching strategies during weekly meetings, emphasizing methods for engaging students and supporting diverse learning needs.
On-the-Job Training During Class:
To help the student achieve the learning outcomes, I will meet with the UCA during class sessions to provide real-time guidance, clarify expectations for assigned tasks, and address any immediate concerns or questions.
Collaborative Task Planning:
To help the student achieve the learning outcomes, I will involve the UCA in planning and prioritizing course-related tasks, teaching them organizational and time-management skills.
Tasks/Duties
Evaluating Student Assignments:
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by grading reading annotations, essays, and in-class poster sessions using detailed rubrics and providing constructive feedback to students.
Organizing Course Materials:
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by updating and aligning the Canvas course platform with the syllabus, ensuring accessibility and clarity for all students.
Leading Exam Study Sessions:
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by preparing and facilitating study sessions, guiding students through key concepts, and addressing their questions to enhance comprehension.
Responding to Student Inquiries:
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by answering student questions related to course content and assignments in a professional and supportive manner.
Collaborating in Class Sessions:
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by actively participating in class, staying current with the material, and assisting with organizational tasks while observing teaching techniques.
Applying Pedagogical Skills:
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by engaging with students during discussions or activities and using effective communication techniques to foster a positive learning environment.
