Public Relations InternAt — Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Cal State Fullerton
As a Public Relations Intern, you will act as a key liaison between the Marketing, Communications, and Design team in Associated Students Inc. and other ASI departments, helping to promote ASI’s programs, events, and initiatives. You’ll collaborate with departments to develop messaging strategies, write press and newsletter materials, and represent ASI at various events by staffing information tables and engaging with students.
This position offers a valuable opportunity to develop your public relations, event promotion, and interpersonal communication skills while working with a diverse range of clients within ASI.
Tasks:
Writing and Editing
• Draft press releases, newsletters, social media posts, and announcements tailored to specific audiences.
• Edit and proofread content to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with ASI branding guidelines.
Public Relations Campaigns
• Assist in planning and executing PR strategies to support organizational objectives.
• Collaborate with ASI departments to develop compelling messaging and promotional materials.
Event Promotion and Coordination
• Support event promotion by creating and distributing materials like flyers, press kits, and social media assets.
• Staff information tables at events, engaging with students and representing ASI to build awareness of its initiatives.
Brand Messaging and Consistency
• Ensure all communications align with ASI’s mission, values, and branding guidelines.
• Adapt messaging for diverse audiences, maintaining consistency in tone and style.
Client Interaction and Collaboration
• Work directly with internal clients (ASI departments) to understand their goals and provide PR support.
• Coordinate the selection and distribution of promotional items for events and campaigns.
• Manage client requests and deadlines using project management tools like Basecamp.
Customer Interaction and Public Speaking
• Interact with students, staff, and campus partners to promote events and services effectively.
• Develop public speaking and customer service skills through event participation and role-playing exercises.
Training:
Onboarding and Orientation
• Overview of Associated Students, Inc. (ASI), including its mission, values, and the role of the Marketing, Communications, and Design team.
• Introduction to ASI’s internal clients (departments) and an overview of their goals and initiatives.
• Review of PR policies, communication protocols, and branding guidelines.
PR Writing and Media Relations
• Hands-on instruction in writing press releases, announcements, social media posts, and newsletters.
• Training on pitching stories to the media and effectively communicating with journalists.
Event Promotion and Coordination
• Learn event promotion strategies, including creating materials like flyers, social media posts, and press kits.
• Shadow experienced team members during event planning and preparation, gaining insight into on-site logistics and table staffing best practices.
Branding and Messaging
• Training on how to adapt and apply ASI’s branding guidelines to maintain consistency across all communications.
• Practice tailoring messages for different audiences while staying aligned with ASI’s mission and tone.
Client Interaction and Project Management
• Gain experience working directly with ASI departments to understand their needs and develop appropriate PR strategies.
• Training on how to manage multiple client requests and deadlines using project management tools (e.g., Basecamp).
• Gain experience working with clients to select, order, and distribute promotional items such as branded giveaways, event swag, and printed materials.
Public Speaking and Customer Interaction
• Participate in role-playing exercises and mock scenarios to practice effective communication when staffing information tables at events.
• Develop customer service techniques for engaging with students, staff, and event attendees.
