The Hornets Resource Center at Fullerton College is seeking a dedicated and compassionate intern to assist students with drop-in support related to CalFresh and Medi-Cal benefits. Key Responsibilities:

Provide direct, drop-in assistance to students seeking help with CalFresh and Medi-Cal applications, ensuring they understand eligibility requirements and the application process.
Assist students in gathering necessary documentation and completing forms for CalFresh and Medi-Cal enrollment.
Work closely with Hornets Resource Center staff to maintain accurate records of students assisted and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information.
Conduct outreach on campus to promote the availability of drop-in services, including tabling events, digital outreach, and collaboration with student organizations.
Stay updated on any changes to CalFresh and Medi-Cal policies and procedures, ensuring the information provided to students is current.
Assist with additional basic needs services as needed, such as referrals to food pantries, housing resources, or emergency financial assistance.

Training:

1. Orientation (Mandatory)
Overview of the Hornets Resource Center mission, values, and services.
Introduction to the role of basic needs services in supporting student success.
Walkthrough of policies, procedures, and confidentiality expectations, including FERPA and HIPAA compliance.
2. Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings
Regular check-ins with a supervisor to discuss progress, address challenges, and provide feedback.
Review of case scenarios to reinforce best practices in student support and resource navigation.
3. Job Shadowing
Interns will observe experienced staff assisting students with CalFresh and Medi-Cal applications during the first two weeks to learn effective support techniques.
Shadow outreach events to understand campus engagement strategies.
4. Workshops and Skills Training
CalFresh and Medi-Cal Application Training: Step-by-step guidance on eligibility requirements, common application barriers, and troubleshooting strategies.
Basic Needs Referrals: Training on identifying and connecting students to additional services such as on-campus social workers, housing resources, and financial aid.
Cultural Competency: Strategies for understanding and supporting the diverse identities and experiences of Fullerton College students.
5. Overview and Contextualization of Assigned Tasks
Clear breakdown of daily responsibilities, including application assistance, outreach planning, and record-keeping.
Contextualizing the importance of each task in relation to the overall goal of reducing barriers for students.
6. Training Literature and Testing
Interns will review resource guides and current policy updates for CalFresh and Medi-Cal to ensure accuracy in advising students.
Role-playing scenarios will test interns’ ability to navigate common challenges, such as incomplete documentation or misinformation.
