Unheard Gems is a music publication dedicated to amplifying the voices of emerging artists. We believe in artist education and advocacy, and we're looking to grow our team of passionate music journalists and budding PR professionals.

Journalism Opportunities

We're seeking new music journalists to join our team. As a contributing writer, you'll be expected to provide at least 1 song review per week from our database of emerging artists. This is an unpaid, remote internship or volunteer position, with a time commitment of 2-5 hours per week.

PR & Marketing Internships

In addition to our publication, Unheard Gems offers PR, marketing, and social media consulting services to artists just starting their careers. We're looking for interns to join our PR branch and gain hands-on experience in artist promotion, educational services, and digital strategy.

PR/Marketing interns must also contribute as a writer for the Unheard Gems publication. This is an unpaid, remote internship or volunteer position, with a time commitment of 2-8 hours per week.

Tasks

Music Journalism and Writing:

Write at least one in-depth song review per week, adhering to Unheard Gems’ editorial standards.
Conduct research on emerging artists, including their background, influences, and discography, to provide insightful content.
Draft artist interviews and feature pieces, ensuring professional communication and preparation.
Public Relations and Marketing Support:

Assist in the creation of press materials, including press releases, artist bios, and pitch emails.
Develop promotional campaign ideas for independent artists, tailored to their branding and target audience.
Research industry trends and competitor campaigns to inform innovative strategies.
Social Media Strategy and Content Creation:

Contribute to social media campaigns by drafting posts, captions, and visual content for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter.
Monitor social media metrics to assess engagement and make recommendations for improvement.
Engage with followers and music communities to build audience engagement.
Collaboration and Teamwork:

Participate in team meetings to share updates, brainstorm ideas, and provide feedback.
Collaborate with other interns and team members on special projects, such as artist features or promotional events.
Artist Advocacy and Education:

Research and create educational resources for emerging artists, covering topics like branding, PR basics, and release strategies.
Engage in email correspondence with artists and their teams to facilitate reviews, interviews, or promotional efforts.
Professional Development:

Shadow team members to observe industry best practices in journalism and artist promotion.
Receive and incorporate feedback on writing, social media strategies, and PR tasks to refine skills.

Training

General Orientation:
At the start of the internship, students will receive an overview of Unheard Gems’ mission, values, and processes. This includes an introduction to our editorial guidelines, PR strategies, and database of emerging artists.

Weekly Mentor Meetings:
Interns will have scheduled one-on-one or group check-ins with their supervisor to discuss progress, address challenges, and set goals. These meetings will also provide an opportunity for constructive feedback on writing and PR tasks.

Hands-On Training:
Interns will gain practical experience by working on real-world tasks, such as writing reviews, creating promotional materials, and contributing to social media campaigns. Work samples will be provided as templates to ensure clarity in expectations.

Job Shadowing and Contextual Guidance:
Interns will observe professionals within the team to learn how to conduct artist interviews, develop press kits, and manage client relationships. Assigned tasks will be contextualized with examples and best practices.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this academic internship, the student will be able to:

Analyze and critique music effectively by producing at least one high-quality song review per week, demonstrating an understanding of emerging artists and current industry trends.

Develop foundational public relations and marketing strategies tailored to independent artists, including creating press materials, planning promotional campaigns, and understanding digital marketing techniques.

Apply content creation skills to a music publication by writing engaging articles and reviews, while adhering to editorial guidelines and deadlines.

Manage social media platforms and strategies by contributing to artist-focused social media campaigns and understanding metrics to track engagement and growth.

Communicate professionally with artists and teams by engaging in email correspondence, interview preparation, and fostering positive relationships with emerging musicians.
