PROJECT OVERVIEW
Tobacco & Vape Use Prevention:
This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in advancing Public Health policy! Since 1997, America On Track has been taking a leading role in Orange County to successfully implement Tobacco & Vape Use Prevention programs. Our projects are designed to change social norms regarding tobacco use and vaping, lower youth access to tobacco, and reduce residents’ exposure to secondhand smoke through direct services and policy work.
INTERN’S KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and maintain a positive and respectful relationship with the America On Track team and all stakeholders involved in our tobacco control initiatives.
- Aid in the implementation of the initiatives by participating in appropriate trainings, meetings and program activities.
- Serve as a liaison between program and community, as needed.
- Stay abreast of current tobacco control policies, research, and best practices.
1) Relationship-Building Activities
- Create an inventory of youth-serving organizations within our service regions.
- Assist in developing, scheduling, and implementing bi-annual relationship-building activities with adult representatives from schools and youth-serving organizations.
2) Youth Engagement
- Assist in recruiting youth for participation in the program.
- Assist in delivering high quality, engaging tobacco and vaping prevention educational presentations.
- Participate in youth leadership club committee meetings.
- Assist with youth-led smoking and vaping prevention activities (i.e. tobacco litter clean up, photovoice, sticker shock project, social media posts).
3) Parent/Community Engagement
- Participate in community events and outreach activities for parent groups.
- Conduct key informant and public opinion poll surveys with community stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidates will be in the process of earning a degree in one of the following: Public Health, Nutrition, Health Education, Child & Adolescent Development, Criminal Justice, Human Services, or a related field.
Special Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
High energy and a passion for America On Track’s mission is essential.
- Enthusiasm & ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds.
- Professional image and good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform duties in a proficient manner.
- Detail-oriented person, able to perform multiple tasks within established timelines.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which will include occasional evenings and/or weekends.
- Advanced knowledge of Apple computers and Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint is a plus.
- Reliable transportation and a valid California driver’s license, with minimum required collision and personal injury insurance, is required.
- Subject to applicable law, all prospective hires will be required to demonstrate that they have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
Tasks:
Tasks will be assigned based on the experience and skills of the individual intern and may include follow up phone calls to program volunteers and participants, database entry for tracking program participants and activities interns for statistical analysis and reporting, preparing program materials and handouts, assist program coordinator with events and activities, filing.
The intern will always be with one of our AOT staff members at the school site. They are to never be left alone with the children.
Training:
Students will receive a general employer orientation, weekly one-on-one meetings with the supervising program coordinator, overview of assigned tasks with work samples when appropriate.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will demonstrate a better understanding of assigned program goals, nonprofit program implementation, tracking measures and client follow up.
