Opportunity Summary 

Undergraduate students play a crucial role at Inner City Law Center and help
ensure every resident of Los Angeles County has access to safe and affordable
housing. Students are assigned to one of ICLC’s project areas and work on a variety of tasks designed to strengthen their professional skills and introduce them to a career in public interest law.

Tasks:

Student will assist with any aspect of active cases from intake to drafting simple legal documents and data entry. Student may also assist with updating case management software, research, and observe courtroom proceedings.

Supervisor will meet with student each week, along with during weekly team meetings. Supervisor will determine which substantive trainings are needed based on the projects assigned to the student. For instance, student may be trained on intake, client-centered lawyering practices, basics of eviction law, etc. During orientation, the student filled out a form listing their goals for the semester and the supervisor will review this periodically with the student to ensure they are getting a wide variety of projects and opportunities designed to meet these goals. Supervisor will provide informal feedback after each project and formal feedback at the end of the semester (or earlier if needed).

Training:

Student will receive training on ICLC-specific policies and substantive legal areas relevant to student's work, which may include housing, citation clearing, and client-centered lawyering.

Learning Outcome:

Have a better understanding of LA's homelessness crisis; gain a deeper understanding of the role of legal aid organizations in serving vulnerable communities; get experience working with clients and community partners in legal matters designed to remove barriers to income and housing.
