Current Availability: Between 2 and 8 pm Monday-Saturdays open, Sunday's also available.

Behavior Specialists are responsible for assisting behavior analysts to implement behavior reduction and skill acquisition treatment plans. The candidate will assist clients with day to day activities, monitor their behavior, record and collect data on patients’ progress, and communicate with clients. Other duties may include clerical and administrative duties.

To be successful in this role, you will display a compassionate nature, empathy, and be flexible. You should have excellent communication and time management skills, and be able to develop and maintain relationships with clients, supervisors, and colleagues. Prior experience in a behavioral health setting is advantageous.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide direct care to clients in a one-on-one or group therapy setting to implement skill acquisition and behavior reduction treatments as directed by the supervisor.
  • Collect and record data on patient behavior.
  • Collaborate, communicate, and assist with the training of clients, parents, and staff.
  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for patients and family.
  • Carry out clinical assessments and other administrative duties.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Attend training to acquire further knowledge.

Basic & Physical Requirements:

  • Sit, stand, bend, and play with children for the entire session averaging 1-3 hours.
  • Must be able to use a computer, tablet and take electronic data accurately.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and car insurance.
  • Driving to clients home up to 20 miles each way. Drive time and mileage is reimburse between clients.
  • You must be able to commit to a weekly schedule

It could be a possibility as we provide services throughout all Southern Ca Counties. However, if a situation arises that a staff member feels uncomfortable they are told in training to request reassignment.

Will the student ever be required to work alone at night? *

We are open to provide services until 8pm. Interns will be alone in the family home until sessions are over if they are scheduled between 6-8 PM

Please describe the circumstances under which the interaction will take place. *

We are in the field to work with children on reducing inappropriate behaviors. This could include tantrums, eloping, aggression, throwing, and spitting are all possible. All staff are trained on behavior support plans and also only paired with clients of their experience and skill level.

Will the supervisor for the student(s) be working at a different location from the student? *

All BCBAs work remotely and provide telehealth supervision to the staff and clients. We also have mid level supervisors on staff that provide in person support during sessions.

Training:

Training Provided During Internship Placement
To ensure that students achieve the identified learning outcomes, the internship will include a comprehensive training program consisting of the following components:
1. General Employer Orientation (Mandatory) – Week 1
Overview of the organization’s mission, values, and policies.
Introduction to workplace expectations, confidentiality (HIPAA compliance), and professional conduct.
Safety training, including emergency procedures and de-escalation techniques.
2. Initial ABA Foundations Training – Weeks 1-2
Behavior Analysis Principles: Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), reinforcement strategies, behavior reduction techniques, and data collection methods.
Client Interaction Protocols: Training on professional interactions with clients, caregivers, and interdisciplinary teams.
Ethics & Compliance: Understanding the BACB RBT Ethics Code and guidelines for ethical service delivery.
Training Literature Review: Assigned readings from ABA textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, and case studies.
3. Job Shadowing & Observation – Weeks 1-3
Students will shadow experienced Behavior Specialists and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) to observe:
Implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
Data collection and progress monitoring.
Natural Environment Teaching (NET) and Discrete Trial Training (DTT) in action.
Structured debriefing sessions with supervisors to discuss observations and answer questions.
4. Hands-On Skills Training – Weeks 2-6
Supervised Application of ABA Techniques: Students will begin applying learned ABA strategies under close supervision.
Role-Playing and Simulation Exercises: Practicing behavior intervention strategies with peers before working with clients.
Data Collection Practice: Completing sample data sheets and analyzing trends before working on real cases.
Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings: Reviewing progress, discussing challenges, and refining intervention skills with a supervisor.
5. Gradual Increase in Responsibilities – Weeks 4-12
Client Engagement: Interns will begin directly working with clients while being observed and receiving feedback.
Independent Data Collection: Interns will independently collect, graph, and interpret behavioral data to assist in treatment planning.
Active Participation in Team Meetings: Students will engage in discussions on client progress and treatment adjustments.
Training & Skills Workshops: Additional training on Functional Communication Training (FCT), task analysis, and behavior extinction methods.
6. Evaluation & Final Competency Assessment – Weeks 11-12
Interns will undergo a final skills assessment to demonstrate proficiency in:
Behavior implementation strategies.
Data collection and analysis.
Ethical considerations and professional conduct.
Written self-reflection and supervisor evaluation to assess strengths, areas for improvement, and readiness for future professional roles.

The student intern will engage in a range of professional and pre-professional duties designed to provide hands-on experience in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and behavior intervention services. These tasks will ensure the intern demonstrates the required learning outcomes and gains practical skills for future employment in the field.

1. Direct Client Support (40%)
Assist in implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) under supervision.
Utilize reinforcement strategies to increase desired behaviors and reduce maladaptive behaviors.
Support clients in developing communication, social, and adaptive skills using Discrete Trial Training (DTT), Natural Environment Teaching (NET), and Functional Communication Training (FCT).
Assist in behavior de-escalation using proactive strategies to prevent crisis situations.
Engage clients in structured and play-based activities to promote skill acquisition and generalization.

2. Data Collection and Analysis (25%)
Accurately record session data on targeted behaviors using frequency counts, duration tracking, and interval recording.
Maintain detailed progress notes following each session, ensuring compliance with professional standards.
Graph and analyze behavioral data trends to evaluate intervention effectiveness.
Participate in interobserver agreement (IOA) assessments to ensure reliability in data collection.
Assist in preparing progress reports for supervisors and contribute to treatment planning discussions.

3. Assessment & Program Development Support (15%)
Assist in conducting preference assessments to identify effective reinforcers.
Support BCBAs in administering skill-based assessments (e.g., VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R).
Observe and document client behaviors to help with Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA).
Assist in developing task analyses for teaching new skills and daily living activities.

4. Professional Development & Team Collaboration (10%)
Attend and participate in weekly supervision meetings with a BCBA mentor.
Engage in case study discussions to analyze intervention strategies and ethical considerations.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, caregivers, and educators to ensure a holistic approach to intervention.
Review and discuss training literature on best practices in ABA and behavior analysis.
Complete required ethics and compliance training related to HIPAA and client confidentiality.

5. Documentation & Reporting (10%)
Maintain client confidentiality in all documentation and interactions.
Write session notes following organizational guidelines to ensure compliance and continuity of care.
Assist in preparing reports for treatment team meetings.
Document and report any incidents, progress updates, or concerns to supervisors promptly.
Organize and manage client data logs, program materials, and behavior tracking sheets.

Final Deliverables & Internship Evaluation
At the end of the internship, the student will:
