Public Health Financial InternAt — County of Tulare

Opportunity Summary 

Public Health Financial Intern within the Health and Human Services Agency in Tulare County, to categorize expenses & revenues, research financial reporting guidelines for an FQHC-LAL, identify and apply regulatory requirements to expense & revenue categorization, complete financial analysis, and present findings.

Tasks:

  1. The intern will also verbally describe the relationship(s) between the data sets they choose to analyze.
  2. The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by designing transaction categorizations based on regulatory requirements and verbally describe the financial data relationship with the regulatory requirements.
  3. The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by successfully preparing the audit workbook and answer audit questions for fiscal operations executive staff.
  4. The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by successfully presenting recommendations for the organization and answering presentation questions

Training:

  1. To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will provide the intern with up to 5 hours of one-on-one training on data categorization and pivot tables to help analyze data.
  2. To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will provide instructions and weekly mentoring to ensure interns understand regulatory requirements and be available to answer questions as issues arise.
  3. To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will meet with the intern weekly and provide feedback on audit preparedness and describe some of the common audit challenges.
  4. To help the intern achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will provide the student with mentorship and suggestions on presenting data clearly to ensure effective communication with others.

Learning Outcome:

  1. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to work with large financial data sets in Excel, categorize transactions, and create pivot tables to display the data.
  2. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to review regulatory requirements and apply regulations to complex financial reporting including accruals.
  3. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to develop an audit ready workbook.
  4. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to present their regulatory inspired categorized transaction workbook along with audit back up.
