Position Summary
The Student Research Intern Program (SRIP) is a volunteer, non-credit course designed to provide high school students (minimum age 16 with parental authorization), and non-UC Irvine undergraduate students the opportunity to experience research as an intern under the direct supervision of a professor in the School of Medicine. This program provides students with practical experience in hematopoietic stem cell transplant and cellular therapy research settings.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Student Research Internship Program, you must fall into one of the three student categories listed below:
- Non-UC Irvine undergraduate students
- High school students (Must be 16 or older)
- UC Irvine Undergraduate students (summer term ONLY)
Program Length
Student assignment periods may range from a minimum of one (1) month to twelve (12) months.
The exact duration of the program will be influenced by the classification of students, such as non-UC Irvine undergraduate, high school student or UC Irvine undergraduate (summer term ONLY)
Task:
• Extract medical data from electronic medical records
• Prescreen patients to determine if they meet study criteria
• Analysis of data including:
\uf0d8 -interpreting data
\uf0d8 -summarizing results
\uf0d8 Interact with trial sponsors
\uf0d8 Participate in audits
\uf0d8 Show accuracy of data collection
Training:
• Initial orientation covering work practices and emergency procedures
• Monthly meetings to review current research protocols until research project begins
• Regular biweekly meetings to review progress and provide mentorship
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to do the following:
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research methodologies
• Demonstrate skills to critically appraise scientific literature
• Ability to effectively communicate research findings
• Show skills to abstract medical data from electronic medical records
